Seminar Abstract
It is widely believed that downstream brain capillaries dilate passively in response to upstream microvessel blood flow and that helical pericytes on these capillaries lack contractile capability due to the absence of detectable α-SMA expression. Challenging this view, we show that downstream capillary pericytes do express both α-SMA and Myosin11, can contract, and play an active role in regulating blood flow.
