PhD student receives Young Researcher Award from the Danish Neurological Society
Rolf Blauenfeldt is a PhD student at the Department of Clinical Medicine and a specialty registrar at the Department of Neurology at Aarhus University Hospital (AUH). He has just been awarded the Danish Neurological Society's Young Researcher Award for his translational research.
Rolf Blauenfeldt’s research examines pathophysiological mechanisms and the use of acute diagnostic imaging for acute strokes. He has acquired extensive knowledge in laboratory and basic research, which according to his colleagues makes him a highly competent player in translational research.
"Rolf has good interpersonal skills, he is knowledgeable in his field, and he’s an inspirational clinical resource. He’s also an excellent communicator and has been a co-supervisor for engineering students, pregraduate research students and postgraduate PhD students," says Professor Grethe Andersen, who nominated Rolf Blauenfeldt for the Young Researcher Award.
Rolf Blauenfeldt is particularly interested in the so-called conditioning method, and he was a coordinator and investigator on the RESIST study, which investigated the effect of ischemic conditioning (compression) for acute strokes. Compression to restrict blood flow to the arm with a blood pressure cuff starts in the ambulance and is repeated in the hospital. The study was a randomised trial and it included 1,500 patients from four participating stroke centres and associated ambulance services. The study has attracted considerable international interest.
