New professor to improve outcomes for stroke patients

Vladimir Matchkov started as a professor of cardiovascular physiology at the Department of Biomedicine on 1 December 2023. His research at the department will centre on improving the treatment of patients who have suffered a stroke.

The professorship gives Vladimir Matchkov an opportunity to establish new collaborations both in Denmark and abroad. He considers his new title as a big pat on the back and looks forward to further developing a strong research school within circulatory physiology at Aarhus University and to training a new generation of researchers.

Apoplexy (or strokes) affect millions of people worldwide every year. Despite great advances in treatment, many survivors experience severe impairment of their brain function. The impairment appears to be caused by poor blood-vessel function, which can interrupt blood flow to the brain.

Blood flow determines the amount of oxygen and nutrients delivered to the body's organs and is controlled by many different mechanisms. Even a brief interruption of blood flow to the brain can lead to loss of consciousness and brain damage.

"My research focuses on the mechanisms that keep blood flow in balance with the brain's needs, and on how these mechanisms are affected by diseases such as apoplexy.

My goal is to improve outcomes for stroke patients and to be able to suggest new treatment strategies. My research might also benefit neurological patients suffering from migraines and dementia, or even patients with high blood pressure and diabetes, who might also have reduced brain function," says Vladimir Matchkov.
