Chronic renal diseases are among the biggest public health problems in the world, and it is estimated that 10-15% of the adult population in Denmark suffers from them. The new professor Rikke Nørregaard and her research team is conducting research into the basic mechanisms in the development of renal fibrosis, which occurs when normal kidney tissue is replaced by scar tissue. When this happens, the kidney function of patients is reduced and, in the worst-case scenario, they must be given dialysis treatment or undergo a kidney transplantation.

The aim of the professor’s research is to develop and identify new treatment options for patients with chronic renal diseases. She does this through translational research, which is based on both experimental and clinical studies.

“The professorship provides an opportunity to create a close link between experimental clinical research and basic research in the field of kidney diseases. This is important in the Danish university and hospital environments, where we aim to accelerate the implementation of basic scientific results, to the benefit of the patients,” says Rikke Nørregaard.

Rikke Nørregaard will hold her inaugural lecture on 28 April 2023.
