English professor will strengthen epidemiological research

A new affiliated professor has joined the Department of Clinical Medicine in the shape of Professor Joe West, who comes from the University of Nottingham. He will correlate data from Danish and English health registers and strengthen research into first and foremost liver diseases.

Professor Joe West has extensive experience with epidemiological research based on British health data.

Large cohort studies provide a good foundation for further work on new recommendations for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. In Denmark, we have very detailed data from hospital admissions that can be correlated with other health data. The Department of Clinical Medicine has wished to strengthen the epidemiological research by utilising detailed data from general practitioners in the UK and has therefore appointed Joe West from the University of Nottingham as affiliated professor. Joe West will contribute to carrying out large cohort studies that combine data from Danish and British health registers.

The professor is a specialist in diseases of the liver and intestines and has extensive experience of epidemiological research. Research into liver cancer and alcohol-related liver disease will be the focal point of the first studies in collaboration with Professor Peter Jepsen, who is also affiliated with the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Aarhus University Hospital.

It is expected that Joe West will also be able to contribute to epidemiological research in other areas. His areas of expertise also include pregnancy, child health and blood disorders.
