For the past decade, Nikolaj Rittig has conducted research into how the intestines affect our appetite and metabolism, depending on the food, nutritional supplements or medicine we consume. According to the researcher, this insight is crucial because it sheds light on the vital role of the intestines in diabetes and could pave the way for new treatment methods and prevention strategies for diabetes in the future.

"I’m extremely honoured that my work is being recognised. I think it's a very exciting field of research, and the award has encouraged me to continue researching the many things we don't yet know about diabetes. I'm certain that the knowledge we generate will have a major impact on treatment and prevention of the disease in the future," he says.

The Bagger-Sørensen Foundation's Young Researcher Award is presented up to two times annually to young researchers under the age of 40 who have made an extraordinary contribution. This year, the award goes to Nikolaj Rittig and Lasse Malmqvist from Rigshospitalet - Glostrup and University of Copenhagen. The award comes with a cash prize of DKK 100,000 earmarked for research.

Nikolaj Rittig was born in Aarhus in 1985.
