The Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine was initiated in 2007 between the University of Oslo, Umeå University, University of Helsinki and EMBL. As a result, three nodes were established in Norway, Sweden and Finland, each of which complements the research expertise of the other partners and, working closely with EMBL, aims to rise to challenges in biomedicine and to foster industry collaborations.
In March 2013 the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine celebrated two important milestones: the renewal of the partnership agreement for an extended period of 10 years, and the expansion of the Nordic EMBL network with the official opening of the Danish Research Institute of Translational Neuroscience (DANDRITE) at Aarhus University, which became its Danish node.
The partnership facilitates scientific collaboration and access to scientific infrastructure, including databases, facilities and instrumentation, as well as services and training activities provided by the partners. In addition to their partnership with EMBL, the individual Nordic research centres engage in collaborations with other national partners, including research and public health institutes, hospitals and research councils, with the aim of establishing an extensive Nordic network for molecular medicine.
The Nordic EMBL partnership in Molecular Medicine is supported by Nordforsk for a Nordic Network of National Centres of Excellence (NCE). This network “Nordic Molecular Medicine Network” (NMMN) promotes collaboration and exchange between the partnership nodes FIMM, NCMM, DANDRITE, MIMS and EMBL. The overall aim of NMMN is to promote collaboration between the nodes of the Nordic partnership and EMBL and the NMMN meets annually, where the nodes are alternating as hosts.
